Wireless Data Communications Workshop

29 September 2006

Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre

In 2003, the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) ranked Hong Kong as No.1 in the so-called “Mobile Internet Index”. However, the mobile data communication services in Hong Kong seemed taking-off pretty slowly in terms of users’ adoption of Short Message Services. Dr. Xu Yan and his colleagues from HKUST Business School conducted an investigation and found that the SMS is perceived by Hong Kong’s mobile users as at most a second class service in terms of its usefulness. Hong Kong is calling for more advanced mobile data communication services.

The launching of 3G services has provided a more sophisticated platform for innovative data communication services. Three trends can be witnessed in Hong Kong’s current mobile data communications market: convergence between mobile communications and media (Newspaper, TV broadcasting, Radio broadcasting, Internet Portal, etc.); convergence between fixed network and mobile network; and corporate resource synergy, e.g. delivering the same channels simultaneously over mobile TV and IPTV.

However, data communications may not be limited to 3G networks. Taipei City Government’s ambitious program offering fully covered city-wide WiFi and WiMax based network provides an alternative choice for subscribers and application providers. Hong Kong may soon issue broadband wireless access network licenses as well. Will this be an opportunity or challenge to Hong Kong’s wireless communication sector?

It seemed to be the right time to address relevant issues concerning wireless data communications.  The issues concerned include technical solutions, business models, regulatory environment and competitive strategies.
