World Information Society Day in Hong Kong
Paving the way for Hong Kong to become an Information Society
To commemorate the founding of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in year 1865, industry players have chosen May 17 of every year as the “World Information Society Day (WISD)”. This year, with the full support from the Office of the Telecommunication Authority, Hong Kong (OFTA), Communications Association of Hong Kong (CAHK) and Honorable Sin Chung-kai, Legislative Councillor (IT) had joint hands to promote WISD to the local community, particularly to the Generation Y.

| The Press Conference and Launch Ceremony took place at the Microsoft Conference Centre. Acting Financial Secretary of HKSAR - Mr. Stephen Ip, and Director-General of OFTA - Mr. MH Au, have attended as guest of honors to support and the ceremony. During the ceremony, representatives from renowned companies of ICT industry sectors also came to support and share the ICT industry development in Hong Kong. |

| As one of the organizers of WISD, The Legislative Councilor (IT) - Honorable Sin Chung-Kai and Communications Association of Hong Kong (CAHK) - Mr. Hubert Chan officiated the opening ceremony and shared Hong Kong WISD programs to the public. Furthermore, Director-General of OFTA, Mr. MH Au urged the development of Hong Kong local telecommunications industry and shared the growth of ICT locally and internationally. |

One of the
highlights of the ceremony was
the book launch of Hong
Kong’s Telecommunications Story
produced
by the CAHK. After a decade
of data research and collection
from over one hundred industry
gurus, this first edition has
exhibited the history and development
of Hong Kong telecommunication
industry in the past century.
To celebrate the birth of this
book, the project leader of
Hong Kong’s Telecommunications
Story, Mr. Joseph
Tsui, revealed the first print
of the book during the ceremony
and would deliver this book
to the Chief Executive, Mr.
Donald Tsang Yam-kuen, as commemoration
after the ceremony.
Right
after the book launch, a Prize
Presentation of the “Harmony
in Motion” Scholastic SMS Composition
Contest was held during the
ceremony. This contest aimed
to stimulate the youth creativity
and use of ICT in their daily
communications. Among almost
500 compositions, 20 finalists
were selected by the judging
panel for public voting. Public
voting ended on May 9 and four
winners, Gold, Silver, Most
Outstanding and Most Favorite
Awards have been nominated.
All the awarded compositions
will be posted on the official
website for “WISD in Hong Kong”
(http://www.cahk.hk/WISD/sms_download.html)
from May 17 to June 30, 2007
for the public to browse and
download for free. For this
contest, public voters also
had a chance to participate
the lucky draw and win prizes.
