World Information Society Day in Hong Kong

Paving the way for Hong Kong to become an Information Society

To commemorate the founding of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in year 1865, industry players have chosen May 17 of every year as the “World Information Society Day (WISD)”. This year, with the full support from the Office of the Telecommunication Authority, Hong Kong (OFTA), Communications Association of Hong Kong (CAHK) and Honorable Sin Chung-kai, Legislative Councillor (IT) had joint hands to promote WISD to the local community, particularly to the Generation Y.

The Press Conference and Launch Ceremony took place at the Microsoft Conference Centre. Acting Financial Secretary of HKSAR - Mr. Stephen Ip, and Director-General of OFTA - Mr. MH Au, have attended as guest of honors to support and the ceremony. During the ceremony, representatives from renowned companies of ICT industry sectors also came to support and share the ICT industry development in Hong Kong.

As one of the organizers of WISD, The Legislative Councilor (IT) - Honorable Sin Chung-Kai and Communications Association of Hong Kong (CAHK) - Mr. Hubert Chan officiated the opening ceremony and shared Hong Kong WISD programs to the public. Furthermore, Director-General of OFTA, Mr. MH Au urged the development of Hong Kong local telecommunications industry and shared the growth of ICT locally and internationally.

One of the highlights of the ceremony was the book launch of Hong Kong’s Telecommunications Story produced by the CAHK. After a decade of data research and collection from over one hundred industry gurus, this first edition has exhibited the history and development of Hong Kong telecommunication industry in the past century. To celebrate the birth of this book, the project leader of Hong Kong’s Telecommunications Story, Mr. Joseph Tsui, revealed the first print of the book during the ceremony and would deliver this book to the Chief Executive, Mr. Donald Tsang Yam-kuen, as commemoration after the ceremony.

Right after the book launch, a Prize Presentation of the “Harmony in Motion” Scholastic SMS Composition Contest was held during the ceremony. This contest aimed to stimulate the youth creativity and use of ICT in their daily communications. Among almost 500 compositions, 20 finalists were selected by the judging panel for public voting. Public voting ended on May 9 and four winners, Gold, Silver, Most Outstanding and Most Favorite Awards have been nominated. All the awarded compositions will be posted on the official website for “WISD in Hong Kong” (http://www.cahk.hk/WISD/sms_download.html) from May 17 to June 30, 2007 for the public to browse and download for free.
