World Telecommunication and Information Society Day in Hong Kong

Theme of 2008 - Connecting Persons with Disabilities: ICT Opportunities for All

The World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (previously known as World Telecommunication Day), which was held for the first time in 1969, is held each year on 17 May to commemorate the founding of the ITU in 1865. This year, with the full support from the Office of the Telecommunication Authority, Hong Kong (OFTA), Communications Association of Hong Kong (CAHK) and Honorable Sin Chung-kai, Legislative Councilor (IT) had joint hands to promote WTISD to the youth community with an aim to enlighten their awareness of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) development in 2007.

The Press Conference and Launch Ceremony took place at the Microsoft Conference Centre. Government Chief Information Officer - Mr. GODFREY Jeremy R., and Director-General of OFTA - Mrs. Marion LAI CHAN Chi Kuen, have attended as guest of honors to support and the ceremony.

As one of the organizers of WTISD, The Legislative Councilor (IT) - Honorable Sin Chung-Kai and Communications Association of Hong Kong (CAHK) - Mr. Hubert Chan officiated the opening ceremony and shared Hong Kong WTISD programs to the public. Furthermore, Principal of Chun Tok School, Ms Mi-har LAI, has shared on the theme of WTISD-HK 2008: "Connecting Persons with Disabilities: ICT Opportunities for All".

Right after the sharing, an awards and prizes Presentation of the Pan-PRD ICT Innovation Competition were held during the ceremony. Geo-caching Hunting Competition Kick-off Ceremony was also held by presenting the hint cards to each group of participants. More than 50 celebrities and representatives of leading ICT companies and 200 students attended the Ceremony. The Ceremony ended with a cocktail which provided a comfortable environment for the guests to share the joy.
