The World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (previously known as World Telecommunication Day), which was held for the first time in 1969, is held each year on 17 May to commemorate the founding of the ITU in 1865. Each year, different countries or cities carry out various activities to celebrate this Day.

Communications Association of Hong Kong (CAHK) together with the Honorable Sin Chung-kai, Legislative Councillor (IT), co-organized the series of programs successfully in Hong Kong to promote the key messages of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day to the youth community with an aim to enlighten their awareness of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) development in 2007. The two parties, with full support from the Office of the Telecommunications Authority (OFTA), will join hands again to continue to fulfill the mission in 2008.

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) further emphasizes the attribute of Telecommunication and changes the program name to the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) for 2008.

The program will be enriched with new initiatives by adding Pan-PRD ICT Innovation Competition and Geo-caching Hunting competition together with the Inter-universities quiz and Communication tour followed by career talks. The intention of the Innovation competition is to build up an innovative society with this annual event subsequently. All prize presentation to winners will be scheduled on the ceremony launch day 17 May, 2008.

「香港世界电讯及资讯社会日」(前身为「世界电讯日」)是为纪念国际电信联盟(ITU)在1865年5月17 日成立而设的日子。每年这天，不同的国家／城市都会举办不同的活动以庆祝。

由2008年开始，「世界电讯日」正式被改名为「香港世界电讯及资讯社会日」，目的为在每年帮助提高资讯及通讯科技 (ICT)带来经济及社会巨大机会之察觉性，与及探究方法以收窄数码鸿沟。

数码的革命性变化开启新的机会以达到发展更进一步，这些新的科技是带来生产力、产生经济及就业增长、及改善整体生活水平的强大工具。我们极之需要青年的一代加入ICT行业来承接以后的发展。

在??管理局全力支持下，香港通讯业联会(CAHK)及单仲偕立法会议员办事处再度携手庆祝二零零八「香港世界电讯及资讯社会日」。其中一个主要的目的是让中学及大专学生体会ICT 的力量及认识这行业更多，并鼓励他们投身ICT行业。

本年度新增了两大项目 [ 泛珠三角资讯及通讯科技创意大赛 ] 及 [ 无线定位寻宝比赛 ] ，更丰富各学生的通讯知识。
